Panacea

Mathis Mootz is a prolific electronic musician and DJ from Germany. Mootz is best known as The Panacea (until 2005, simply as Panacea), his drum and bass stage name and main musical project, and as m2 (pronounced "Squaremeter"), his dark ambient side project and alter-ego.

Born in Wetzlar, Germany, Mootz served an apprenticeship in classical music and was a member of the boy's choir of Windsbach. After studying music engineering at the SAE Institute, Mootz worked with the experimental hip hop/illbient label Chrome, an offshoot of Force Inc Music Works. Over the course of several drum and bass albums and many singles, and as A&R manager for Chrome, later renamed Position Chrome, Panacea became known for pushing the bounds of the drum and bass genre into industrial and hardcore territory, and for energetic DJ sets which fused these genres in a live setting. With his side project m2, he explored a more minimal side of electronic music, first in the realm of clicks 'n' cuts, and later in the dark ambient territory pioneered by the likes of Lustmord. Mootz lives and produces in Sommerhausen, a countryside town near Würzburg, and Berlin.

Mootz experimented hip hop/illbient with men in the mid-1990s, an offshoot of Force Inc Music Works. Under the name Panacea, he released a string of dark drum and bass singles on the label in 1996, followed by the LPs Low Profile Darkness in 1997 and Twisted Designz in 1998, which pushed the tech step format established by the UK's Ed Rush and Optical into harsh industrial/digital hardcore territory. Mootz took over Chrome's A&R, and the label was renamed Position Chrome soon after (the label is now under ownership by Mootz), evolving into one of the first and most notable German drum and bass labels.

Mootz's broad musical background led him to experiment in other style, from the avant garde minimalism of his Brasilia soundtrack (part of Caipirinha's Architettura series exploring the relationship between architecture and music), to his collaboration with J-pop singer Hanayo, which saw the duo electronically re-scoring Bach's Ich Steh´ An Deiner Krippen Hier. A number of MCs guested on his LP Phoenix Metabolism (1999), while he refined his industrial drum and bass style on the LP German Engineering (2001). Mootz also began a number of side projects and collaborations in this period, releasing albums of raggacore (as Rich Kid), electro (as Bad Street Boy), hardcore techno (as Kate Mosh), and drum and bass with DJ Scud (as The Redeemer) and Problem Child (as Disorder). Sinecore, the first album by his glitch/dark ambient ego m2 (pronounced "Squaremeter") was released in 2000 on Mille Plateaux. A further ten albums were released by this project coming over labels such as Ant-Zen and Hands Productions.

On The Hardest Tour on Planet Earth (2001) Elements of oldskool hardcore and other early rave music began entering his products and Underground Superstardom (2002) found him fusing early hardcore and jump-up with modern production techniques. The album included "The Evil Seed", a vocal track for which a music video was produced starring german actress Nora Tschirner. Adopting an extremely energetic DJ persona, he became known for sets that were equal parts hardcore and drum and bass. He also began collaborating with Luna-C, one of the champions of the breakbeat hardcore revival known as hardcore breaks. Panacea Shares Needles with Tarmvred, a collaboration with Needle Sharing and Tarmvred in 2002 on Ad Noiseam, combined drum and bass, hardcore, and noise.

Position Chrome ceased activity briefly in 2004 when Force Inc.'s distributors EFA-Medien went bankrupt, but in 2005, Mootz revived the label, changing his name to The Panacea. He has since returned to somewhat darker sounds, releasing a number of singles on Position Chrome, as well as UK labels Freak Recordings, Outbreak and Offkey Records, the latter run by UK producer Raiden and specializing in Techno-DNB.

Currently, The Panacea is part of the Anger Management booking agency roster, which led him to headline countless events of the "Therapy Sessions" franchise.

In 2013 a widely advertised and well-received opera production at the prolific "Deutsche Oper Berlin", to which Mootz contributed music and deejayed the electronic score, both brought him back to his roots in classical music and led him to explore new territories and possibilities.

Command Strange

Hailing from the sunny land of Kazakhstan musician and producer Alexey Fuifanov better known as Command Strange has already become a household name for all lovers of musical side of drum and bass. Having got acquainted with jungle in the tender age of 7 it didn’t take a while for him to get into production. Developing and improving his sound and being only 16 years old Command Strange released his first tunes. Sweet melodic productions full of positive vibes equipped by beautiful soul, jazzy and funky samples quickly gained support from scene’s heavyweights like LTJ Bukem, Marky, Goldie, Bryan G, JJ Frost, A Sides, Hype, Fabio & Grooverider, Crissy Criss, Friction, Artificial Intelligence, Netsky, EZ Rollers, Bailey and others with regular airplay on BBC RADIO 1 and across plenty of web radio stations. After successful singles on Have-A-Break and Fokuz in the beginning of 2010 Command Strange unsurprisingly has been offered an album deal for Fokuz. In November 2010 «Soul Booster» LP described by Kmag as «some of the lushest beats you can imagine» saw a light of the day. Alexey continues to experiment with his sound, somewhat deviating from the usual tasty liquid funk grooves and bringing his vision of jump up, techy and new school areas that can already be seen in the published in late 2011 second solo album "Episode 91" on the same Fokuz Recordings and vinyl singles on Grid and Integral Records.
2012-2013 saw Command Strange changing a focus and broadening a spectrum of his production even more into tight new school beats with rough and nasty basslines. Releases on Horizons, Integral and V Records including a massive achievement in a form of dirty deep roller written with Artificial Intelligence for Metalheadz Platinum cemented Command Strange's position as one of the most promising and versatile producers on the scene.
Currently, being only 22 years old, Alexey has over 100 released tracks under his belt including more than 35 vinyl releases. With forthcoming releases on Innerground, V Records, Horizons Music, Good Looking, Chronic, Fokuz, Integral, Eastside, Celsius, Antillectual Beats and some other labels in the pipeline Command Strange is undoubtedly a name to watch in the years ahead.

Samuli Kemppi

Samuli Kemppi comes from a small city in Finland, but geographical distance hasn’t stopped him from becoming one of Europe’s leading techno producers. However, as he recalls, life in the frozen north always presented some cultural difficulties.

“Track hunting was more challenging in the pre-internet era, specially up here. In the late eighties, there were one or two radio shows that played these unheard sounds that I immediately liked. I think Dutch, Belgian and British sounds were the biggest inspiration to me in the dawn of nineties when I was playing my first gigs. Also some older electro stuff like Africa Bambaata and Egyptian Lover were huge to me,” he explains. Finland was an early adapter of electronic music, something that is borne out by the presence of the pioneering minimalism of Sahko, the label that influenced Sleeparchive and Sandwell District’s sounds. Samuli admits that the first time he heard the music of Jeff Mills and Robert Hood, it was ‘mind blowing’.

“It was so simple and functional, straight to the point,” he says, but hastens to add that “it was not just techno and electro that I grew up listening to. Herbie Hancock was big to me, especially the stuff he did with the Rockit band. Seeing Grandmixer DST doing a turntablism show on my dad’s VHS was a life-changing point.”

Having worked as a DJ since the early 90s, Samuli started to produce music at the start of the new millennium. He worked on the deep house project, Sam & Gigi, which featured the vocalist Laura Petris-Forsell and which yielded or a brace of singles at the start of the 00s. “Deep house has always been big in Helsinki and there are some really good DJs and producers in that field,” he feels.

“Laura (Gigi) wrote the tracks with me and she wrote lyrics and sung. Our last gig was at the end of 2005. Laura was 5 months pregnant at that time. So family happened and I went back to my roots, which is techno,” Samuli explains.

Kemppi believes that his decision to release on a range of labels is down to his willingness to experiment in the studio. “Some producers have many aliases, I feel more comfortable like this and I always try a lot of new things when writing tracks. It wouldn’t make sense to be just on one label since they all have their own music policies – and so much music would stay unheard if I didn’t release on so many labels,” he says, adding that “being up here far away from centre of things, I need to connect on some level”. That said, there is enough activity in Helsinki to keep Samuli busy. Although the scene is relatively small and underground, he says that there are a few excellent venues with amazing sound systems and “the crowd is really good: on a good night, I wouldn’t change it for anything else”.

Then there’s the matter of Samuli’s Deep Space Helsinki project. Initially it was the name for his radio show on Basso Radio with old friend Juho Kusti, a station that Samuli describes as a ‘unique broadcasting project’. “There are over 100 DJs doing specialist shows, music varying from jazz and hip-hop to techno and drum’n’bass. I’ve been doing the show since the beginning, so that’s almost ten years now. Basso started as two-week web radio project and now covers over half of the population in Finland on FM. We’ve come a long way,” he says.

DSH is also the name Samuli and Juho give for the parties they have been throwing in Helsinki for the past few years.
“Nobody was bringing over artists that we liked, so we decided to start bringing them over ourselves – the line ups define our Deep Space Helsinki sound. We want to have a good party with music that we love and give people a deeper option,” he explains.
The final part in the DSH jigsaw is the fledgling label; having released on a range of labels, Samuli has started his own with Juho. To date, there have been two releases, split between Kemppi and Kusti. Samuli explains: “I started talking about DSH with Juho a couple of years ago. He did some amazing tracks. It gives us total freedom to put out whatever we want and full control. We are taking it quite easy and we’re putting out 2 releases a year.”

In between these activities, Samuli also balances a family life and work and continues to put out releases, remixes and his debut album.
“I’ve done a lot of releases and remixes during past couple years out, but I now it is the time for my debut album. The testing and trying is done. Album should hit the stores in Ocober this year” As anyone who has heard his incendiary live performances will agree, the time is right for Samuli Kemppi to take the next step.
