Rainhas do Norte:
Rainhas do Norte (Queens of the North) is an all-women-band of drums & voices, which tries to bring the musical traditions from Northeastern Brazil - especially the maracatu-de-baque-virado, well known in Europe through its influence in the music of Chico Science & Nação Zumbi - with the street-beats of the pop-worldmusic, like funk, drum'n'bass and rock. Rainhas' members are Brazilian and German women, who try to make the local global and the other way round.
Using only their drums and their voices, playing its big bass-drums (alfaias, the typical maracatu drums), snare-drum, timbal, shekeres, and gonguê (a huge cow-bell, which drives the rhythm), they play old traditional maracatu songs as well as new versions of maracatu classics and their own compositions. They sound massive and melodic at the same time. Their groove and their drive are just irresistible - the audience can never stay still.
On the stage the band's members are always changing their positions. This brings much movement to the live performances. Many of the Rainhas are both singers and percussionists, so that their sound is always new. This movement may also be experienced and even felt through the Rainhas way of playing. They dance by playing - in other words: their playing is a dance itself.
Brazilian Percussionist Neide Alves founded the band in 2002. In her hometown Recife (Pernambuco) she played in the legendary carnival group Maracatu-Nação Estrela Brilhante and in the renowned band Sagrama. Since its beginnings Rainhas do Norte have been playing in many concerts and festivals in Germany, as the Rudolfstadt Worldmusic Festival, The Samba-Syndrom Festival, The TOHUwaBOHU Festival (organized by Piranha Events), etc.
Now the band is coming to Helsinki, bringing its warm, deep and beautiful music to the city.

Tässä 15.9. soittamani biisejä ja kuvailuja:
Shankaran jälkeen:
* Karsh Kale - Drive [Broken English / Six Degrees, 2006]
-> Keeping it indian for a some time more, this electronic-raag hybrid ballad beautifully introduced electronic elements to the audience.
* Holmes Ives feat. Susan Oetgen - Te Dijo Te Quiero [In Love & Light Vol.1 / Ova Records, 2006]
-> Beautiful flamenco-guitar led downtempo tune with passionate vocals.
* Clotaire K feat. Natacha Atlas - Maqam [Lebanese / Nocturne, 2003]
-> Lebanon is a hot country right now but in a very sad way. This song is dedicated to all the innocent people who suffer from that crazy war.
* Amsterdam Klezmer Band - Ludacris (C-Mon & Kypski rmx) [AKB Remixed / Essay, 2006]
-> dubbed out klezmer band remixed by cut-and-paste hiphop producers C-Mon & Kypski, also from the Netherlands.
* DJ Dolores - Matilha (Pack of Dogs) [Aparelhagen / Ziriguiboom, 2005]
-> DJ Dolores about this track:"One can try to escape, one can believe in hiding for a while. But the inexorable dogs of destiny, with their wet noses and powerful jaws, will never lose your trail"
* Novalima - Ritmos Negros [Essential Latin Flavas Dos / Outcaste, 2004]
-> featured track: Afro-Peruvian creole music in electronic world where cool beats and dub basslines mix with the rhythms of 'marinera' and 'festejo' with the help of the quijada (mule's jaw) and the cajon (wooden box).
Sitten Zero Drama heitti kauniin keikan joka sai osan yleisöstä lumoutumaan. Sen jälkeen
* Quantic feat. Ohmega Watts - Blow Your Horn [An Announcement to Answer / Tru Thoughts, 2006]
-> cool new mix between afro-beat and hip-hop from one of today's hottest nu-funk/world/broken beat producer.
* MC Rai - Yamina [Raivolution / Embarka, 2005]
-> a traditional Algerian song about a Bedouin woman comparing feelings of love for home to the love for a beautiful woman. A killer track with thunderous electric guitar. I dedicated it to my possible future mc-brother Mehdi who's born in Algeria.
* Los de Abajo feat. Neville Staples & Dennis "Badbone" Rollins - Los Lunáticos (El Manicomio Está En Manos de los Locos) [LDA v the Lunatics / Real World, 2005]
-> Mexican superstars doing crazy life-affirming party music that's suitable for older audience too.
* La Kinky Beat - Minimal [One More Time / Kasba Music, 2006]
-> they blew the roof off in this year's Maailma Kylässä Club Night and made serious waves of happiness earlier in the Kaisaniemi park also. They describe their music as "rocksteady reggae rock & roll jungle funk ska samba ragga drum'n'bass hiphop" and I think that's pretty complete concept.
* Ojos de Brujo - Todo Tiende [Techari / Diquela, 2006]
-> number one alternative band in Spain combining flamenco with hiphop, funk, reggae, whatever. Such an energy is delivered with laidback attitude to life. This tracks features Prithpal Rajput "Cyber" from the mighty Asian Dub Foundation on dhol (indian party drum).

-> The original version of this great track which mixed Drum'n'Bass and Gypsy music was released in 2004 on Eastenders wonderful debut album "Along the Path" and it has received a great success everywhere it's being played - people just start smiling and doing dance moves even in the bar on Sunday night! This hiphop remix still has those distinctive Turkish march horns.

-> Highly skilled acoustic guitar playing duo in a catchy broken beat remix form by one of the electronic music's pioneers.
* Ryukyu Underground - Seragaki (Karsh Kale rmx) [RU Remixed, Respect Records, 2004]
-> Classic Okinawa music from Japan brought to eletronic world by Ryukyu Underground and remixed by asian finest Karsh Kale to an avant-garde uplifting breakbeat groover.
* Niyaz - Dilruba (Junkie XL rmx) [Niyaz remixed EP (digital only release) or Traveler '06 / Six Degrees, 2006]

-> Master oud player and eletronic wizard with his master musician friends doing experimental 4/4 dance track.
* Amira Saqati - Marrakech Express [Destination Halal / Barraka, 2005]
-> Highly spiritual electronic music instead of sex, drugs and hiphop attitude of many of today's young electronic producers. This track mixes traditional Moroccan & Arabic/Oriental music with modern trance music. It's a pity that they are not listed in the record labels website. How 'bout some updating, guys? They have myspace.
* Lumin - Hayamo [III promo EP / Lumin Music, 2005]
-> Fusion East-European folk music with modern electronic magic and featuring gorgeous vocal by Kazakshtan-born Irina Mikhailova.
* John Arnold - Jangal [Style & Pattern / Ubiquity, 2005]
-> Rude broken beats and African chanting combine in this killer future dancefloor burner.

-> cool & sinister ethno-grime track with indian elements and incredible grip.
* Bonde do Role - Funk da Esfiha [Melo do Tabaco Ep / Mad Decent, 2006]
-> Dum-da-dim di-di-di-dum di-di-dum... white guys from brazil doing crazy party music in rio baile funk style. Very rough stuff but in a right mood it works just perfect. Check out their myspace for sound clips, but make sure your volume is not too loud since the clips start playing automatically.
* Banco de Gaia - Kara Kum [Farewell Ferengistan / Six Degrees, 2006]
-> A true pioneer of global fusion, being there since late 80's with his new masterpiece album. This monumental song is a tribute to a huge sand area in middle east called Kara Kum.
